The Board
The Chess Board is composed of sixty-eight sqaures, thirty-two of them being white, and the other thirty-two being black. Though black and white are the standard colors of the squares, it is not unusual for a board to use another set of alternating dark and light colors for the board. The color of pieces will usually be in correlation with the color of the sqaures. Each sqaure of the board has its own algebraic name. Each file is numbered, and each rank is lettered, going from 1 to 8, and A to H, respectively. Player White begins on the side of the board with Files 1 and 2, while Player Black starts on the side of the board with Files 7 and 8, as shwon below:
The Pieces
